Patient-specific Orthopaedic Surgical Planning: Image Datasets to Fe Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
Computational simulations of surgical procedures are of significant interest in orthopaedic-related research. Over the years, the finite element method has emerged as a viable means to determine the stresses and strains in implants and their interaction with the host bone. Very few surgical planning studies, however, have been performed on patient-/subject-specific models. Toward that goal, we have made advancements in automating the patientspecific bony geometry definitions from CT and/or MR image datasets and toward automating the development of corresponding patient-specific finite element (FE) mesh definitions via a custom-written software package, IA-FEMesh (Shivanna, 2006). The objective of this project is to advance these efforts by introducing tools to simulate a variety of surgical procedures, thereby interactively incorporating implants into such models. These models may then accommodate the implant under consideration. One day, such models may aid the surgeon in preoperative planning, ultimately resulting in an improved clinical outcome.

Intraoperative brain shift prediction using a 3D inhomogeneous patient-specific finite element model.
OBJECT The aims of this study were to develop a three-dimensional patient-specific finite element (FE) brain model with detailed anatomical structures and appropriate material properties to predict intraoperative brain shift during neurosurgery and to update preoperative magnetic resonance (MR) images using FE modeling for presurgical planning. METHODS A template-based algorithm was developed...

متن کاملToward the Development of Virtual Surgical Tools to Aid Orthopaedic FE Analyses
Computational models of joint anatomy and function provide a means for biomechanists, physicians, and physical therapists to understand the effects of repetitive motion, acute injury, and degenerative diseases. Finite element models, for example, may be used to predict the outcome of a surgical intervention or to improve the design of prosthetic implants. Countless models have been developed ov...
متن کاملThe Use of a 3D Printer in Pre-operative Planning for a Patient Requiring Acetabular Reconstructive Surgery
INTRODUCTION Surgical management of acetabular fractures is often highly complex, and a successful outcome depends upon an appreciation of the fracture pattern and the most appropriate approach to reduce and hold it. Currently, computed tomography (CT) images are used in conjunction with plain x-rays to identify the main fracture components and their spatial relationship to one another, and as ...
متن کاملHip Joint Reconstruction and Motion Visualization Using Mri and Optical Motion Capture
Patients’ anatomical models are increasingly used for both preoperative planning and postoperative guides. The joints motion visualization opens a new level of understanding and can be a valuable diagnosis tool. We propose here to use optical motion capture to simulate internal motions. The ability to image the articulation dynamically and non-invasively in vivo opens the way to the efficient a...
